NATIONAL CITY, Calif. -- More than 3,000 people gathered in Kimball Park on Saturday for the Third Annual Feria De Salud Por Tu Familia in National City. The American Diabetes Association kicked off the fair with the First Annual Fun Run as children ran to finish a half-mile course. New York's district attorney is investigating the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International over the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars, says The New York Times. The organization asked the district attorney's office to investigate after it conducted an internal audit and discovered the money was missing. Gail Pressberg, the secretary of the foundation's board, said the probe is centered on the misappropriation of funds through phony receipts that had been produced on computers. Ms. Pressberg said her organization had fired two employees after its audit determined that a substantial sum was missing. “It's a foolish person who tries this" Ms. Pressberg said. “We catch people." “We had enough evidence to terminate the employees," she added.

Jan Pantera lays responsibility for adult-onset diabetes at the feet of the patient. Unfortunately, this uninformed attitude contributes to the lack of research, and probably lack of interest in the possibility of reversing the situation that causes the disease. There are many of us who never have had any weight problems, have never smoked, always had an active life style and whose diet was always heavily weighted toward vegetables and low carb foods. Those so-called experts write articles and recipe books full of "information" that doesn't even address our problem, which is how to gain weight in a healthy manner that doesn't send our blood sugar into orbit. Our situation came not as a result of anything we had control over. Heredity, medical procedures that turned our metabolism on its ear, and (some believe) stress are beyond our ability to change.

Diabetes affects entire families; Ambassadors launch fundraising walk

Brad Prescott wants researchers to find a cure for diabetes so parents no longer have to watch their children prick their little fingers with needles five times a day. The 14-year-old diabetic said it's not right that parents worry every time their child goes out to play or stays overnight at a friend's home. "It's more painful for the parents to watch their son or daughter go through all of this," he said during the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes launch Monday. "When I was diagnosed, my parents were more upset than I was. It was hard on me watching them worry." The Grade 9 St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Catholic Secondary School student also finds it unfair for younger children who are forced into a lifestyle of constantly checking their blood sugar levels.

Eucreas, A Single-tablet Combination Of Galvus And Metformin, Set For ...

European health authorities have approved Eucreas(R), an oral tablet combining Galvus(R) (vildagliptin) and metformin, as a new treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes. Eucreas is the first single-tablet combination of a member of the new DPP-4 inhibitor class with metformin to be approved in the European Union. The approval comes after Novartis proposed changes to the EU label recommending that liver monitoring should be conducted at the start of treatment, every three months for the first year, and periodically thereafter. The Eucreas approval closely follows European approval of the updated label for Galvus announced earlier this month. The decision applies in all 27 countries of the EU as well as in Norway and Iceland, and both medicines will be available in the first European countries within the next few weeks.
